Clinical Services

Individual adult and couple therapy:  Dr. Silva-Palacios provides psychotherapy to individual adults who are experiencing depression and various relationships problems in their home and work environment. He also provides pre-marital psychotherapy by helping couples identify strengths and weaknesses in their relationship. Particular attention is given to a healthy understanding of anger, and the need to develop effective conflict resolution skills. Similar help is offered to married couples. Dr. Silva-Palacios also has extensive clinical experience assisting couples dealing with infidelity.

Family therapy: All families struggle at times with situations and issues.  Each individual member brings these challenges to the family unit, and sometimes these are simply normal developmental phases.  For example, the birth of the first child usually forces the couple to make expected as well as unexpected adjustments in their relationship.

Another common situation arises when adolescents push for physical and emotional separation from the parents; similarly, the empty nest syndrome is another life phase that forces the couple to evaluate their relationship in new ways. The death of a grandparent or other beloved family member also often requires professional intervention.

Sometimes however, unexpected circumstances, such as one of the family being diagnosed with a major mental or physical illness, require that family members learn to respond to the needs of the afflicted person while attending to their own needs.  According to research, marital relationships experience tremendous stress when a son or daughter is diagnosed with a major illness.

Dr. Silva-Palacios compassionately assists families in developing the necessary skills to cope effectively with the demands and challenges brought about by such significant events.

For example, a teenage son is diagnosed with major mental illness and must receive appropriate psychiatric care as well as individual psychological treatment.  His parents and the rest of the family members need to be educated about the origins of the mental illness and the implications for his life as well as their own.
